Consultation opens on management plans for Christmas Island Marine Park and Cocos (Keeling) Islands Marine Park
The Director of National Parks is inviting public comments on management plans for Christmas Island Marine Park and Cocos (Keeling) Islands Marine Park.
These marine parks are the two newest marine parks in the national network of Australian Marine Parks. During 2021 and 2022, Parks Australia co-designed the Christmas Island Marine Park and Cocos (Keeling) Islands Marine Park with local island communities and consulted broadly with interested stakeholders. The marine parks were declared under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 in March 2022, following this extensive co-design and broader consultation process.
Parks Australia is now commencing consultation with the public, IOT communities and interested stakeholders on the proposal to prepare draft management plans for Christmas Island Marine Park and Cocos (Keeling) Islands Marine Park. This first public comment period is an opportunity for anyone who is interested to have their say on the future management of these marine parks. Comments will be considered by Parks Australia as it drafts management plans for the marine parks, that will later be released for a second period of public consultation.
