Privacy Notice and Consent

This privacy notice explains how the Director of National Parks, within the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (the department), collects and handles your personal information captured via audio-visual and voice recordings from surveillance devices in Kakadu National Park.

What personal information will be collected?

We collect the following personal information about you via audio-visual recordings:

  • your location information
  • your biometric information, including features of your face or voice
  • information about your racial or ethnic origin.

How we will use and disclose your information

We collect your personal information to use and disclose it for the following purposes:

  • managing the department’s workforce, contractors and public office holders
  • undertaking activities including ensuring workplace health and safety, and facility and asset management
  • monitoring compliance under theEnvironment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth) (EPBC Act) and Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Regulations 2000
  • supporting the Director of National Parks to conserve Australia’s biodiversity and cultural heritage under the EPBC Act.

Audio-visual recordings of you will be made via:

  • surveillance devices,including closed-circuit television (CCTV), and
  • body worn cameras worn by departmental wardens and rangers appointed under the EPBC Act.

Your personal information may also be used and disclosed as authorised or required by other laws. We will not disclose your information to overseas recipients.

Consent to collect, use and disclose your information

By entering Kakadu National Park,you are taken to have consented to your personal information being collected, used and disclosed in accordance with this notice. Your personal information will be handled in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the department’s privacy policy.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

We take reasonable steps to not record sacred sites and secret business of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people in Kakadu National Park, without permission from their family and/or community.
