Kakadu Bird Week soaring through the skies
Kakadu Bird Week is soaring through the Kakadu skies again in 2023 with unique birding, artistic and cultural activities curated by local Bininj/Mungguy Traditional Owners and bird experts from 28 September to 3 October for bird enthusiasts to enjoy.
Kakadu is a bird lover’s paradise with more than 280 bird species including the striking azure kingfisher, blue-winged kookaburras, partridge pigeon, banded fruit dove and rainbow pitta calling the World Heritage listed national park home.
This year’s program is full to the brim with a wide range of birdwatching tours with bird specialists, free art and cultural activities, free ranger-guided walks, and the always-popular sunset boat cruises providing exceptional birdwatching opportunities for visitors.
Kakadu Bird Week coincides with the spectacular sight and noisy sounds of the mass migration of magpie geese, which flock to billabongs such as Yellow Water (Ngurrungurrudjba) to feed.
Kakadu National Park’s Tourism and Visitor Services Manager Adrian Buman said Kakadu Bird Week is a spectacular time to visit as the distinct landscapes of Kakadu come to life with a plethora of colourful and unique birdlife.
“You will find some of Australia’s largest, rarest and most beautiful birds within the breathtaking and varied landscapes of Kakadu from the soaring escarpment of Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) and Anbangbang billabong to the Yellow Water wetlands,” Mr. Buman said.
