A $7 million project to improve road safety and visitor access to key tourist sites at Norfolk Island National Park will commence on 30 September 2022.

Three key roads will be upgraded within the park, including those to Captain Cook Lookout, Mt Pitt and Palm Glen. Road closures will be staggered and managed carefully by park staff during the upgrades. 

Construction will begin on September 30 on Duncombe Bay Rd, which is the access road to one of the island’s premier tourist sites, Captain Cook Lookout. 

In October, works will begin on Mt Pitt Road, a popular vantage point on the island that offers 360-degree views.  

Work on Selwyn Pine Road, the road to Palm Glen Circuit and picnic area, begins in November, with all stage one works due for completion by December 2022.

Norfolk Island National Park visitors are encouraged to visit the National Park office on Grassy Road for the most up-to-date information on road closures. 

During the upgrades, the Norfolk Island National Park network path may provide suitable alternative access for hikers to Captain Cook Lookout, Mt Pitt and Palm Glen. 

The second and final stage of the upgrade will begin in April 2023 and be completed by mid-June, 2023.

Norfolk Island National Park is a popular location for recreational activities, with up to 90 per cent of visitors to the island also attending the Park. 

This year to date, there have been over 18,000 visitors to Norfolk Island National Park. The road upgrades are expected to enhance the visitor experience. 

The upgrade is part of the Australian Government’s $233 million investment to replace and renew infrastructure across all Commonwealth national parks.
