Twin Falls update
The Director of National Parks is committed to working quickly to get key destinations in Kakadu National Park open sooner each year after the wet season. As many will know, access to Twin Falls as been severely limited in recent years due to high water levels at the crossing for much of the dry season. Following consistent feedback from tour operators and others in the tourism sector to improve access, we have made the decision to close Twin Falls in 2020 to conduct significant upgrades.
We are currently in a process with the Northern Land Council to identify the correct Traditional Owners to meet with and discuss some proposals for upgrades at the Jim Jim Creek crossing and the access to Twin Falls plunge pool.
While this important process is underway we are proceeding with identifying a range of concept ideas that will enhance access to these iconic areas of Kakadu National Park and a concept brief is in development.
Design concepts will be finalised by the end of the tropical summer, following which further consultation will take place. Once concepts are finalised a tender process will commence. Work in the area will begin once flow from the falls reaches a point where it is safe to access the area. We are grateful for your understanding and patience while we make these changes to improve tourism access for the long term.
As the upgrades take place at the Jim Jim Creek crossing, which is the access point to Twin falls, walks around the gorge and plateau will also be inaccessible during this time.
Access to Jim Jim Falls won’t be significantly affected while the work to improve access to Twin Falls is undertaken.
