Saving Norfolk Island's endemic land snails

Norfolk Island is home to 70 described species of endemic snails, making it one of Australia’s hotspots of land snail diversity. These species are currently the focus of taxonomic and conservation work by Dr Isabel Hyman and Dr Frank Köhler from the Australian Museum Research Institute.

Parks Australia is funding two exciting Our Marine Parks Grants programs for habitat mapping in Norfolk Marine Park. Together, these eagerly anticipated projects will, for the first time, give us a detailed and current understanding of the underwater ecosystems surrounding Norfolk Island.

The Kermadec petrel (Pterodroma neglecta neglecta) is listed as Vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). Recent control of Purple Swamphens has significantly increased Kermadec Petrel breeding success.

On 17 March 2020 a travel ban was put into effect for arrivals to Norfolk Island. Only residents and essential staff can travel to Norfolk Island until further notice, and anyone returning to the island must self-isolate for 14 days on arrival.

Rare Norfolk cliff plant species on the road to recovery

The Mountain Procris (Elatostema montanum) is endemic to Norfolk Island. It is listed as critically endangered. Only 11 exist in the world naturally, and they are all within Norfolk Island National Park at two locations in the Mount Pitt area.
