Australian National Botanic Gardens

13 December 2023 to 25 February 2024 — Visitor Centre Gallery

An exhibition by local artist Sharon Peoples featuring sophisticated individual embroidered gloves using moths and butterflies found in the Canberra hills.

Sharon Peoples spends a lot of time wandering and wondering about gardens. It’s not plants, so much as the labour and politics of gardening. From her own domestic garden to the local bushland and a little further afield to surrounding national parks, she is energised and draws inspiration by walking in these environments. In a similar way, she thinks about the labour and politics of stitching. Fragility of both the environment and the human condition is reflected in the media Peoples uses, while oscillating between hand and machine embroidery to examine issues. In understanding the deep existential processes of creating and caring for gardens, she explores portraits, self-portraits, the inner secret garden, artists’ gardens, public gardens and gardens of the imagination through stitch.
