Australian National Botanic Gardens

Tuesday 19 March, 10 am - 4 pm — Celia Rosser Room

Learn how to paint Australian native bees in this one day workshop with accomplished local artist Cheryl Hodges.

This workshop is fully booked.

To join the waiting list for this or future workshops, please contact the artist.

In this workshop you will learn how to:

  • observe the structure and form of an Australian native bee, referring to a bee specimen as well as photographs and diagrams
  • use a microscope to investigate and draw smaller areas such as details on the head and legs
  • use watercolour techniques including washes, glazing and dry brush work for a detailed finish
  • make the bee look realistic – hairy, shiny and three dimensional using light, shade and colour.

By the end of the workshop you will be well on the way to finishing a beautiful artwork using fundamental watercolour techniques learnt in this workshop. You will also learn some interesting facts about our amazing native bees and will come away with a new appreciation for the bees and the art of capturing them in watercolour.

Introductory class suitable for beginners to intermediate level artists.
