About this report

The Commonwealth Marine Reserves Indigenous Forum was held in Darwin on 5 December 2012 to seek input into the development of management plans for the marine reserve estate, consistent with requirements under the EPBC Act.

The forum provided an opportunity to explore ways Indigenous communities and organisations could participate in the management of marine reserves.

Land Council representatives and other peak Indigenous organisations from across Australia with links to sea country in the proposed reserves were invited to attend.

Indigenous representatives who participated in the forum compiled a set of principles to assist in the development of appropriate management strategies and actions.

This report was compiled by the facilitator with input from the participants and the department as a record of the forum discussions and outcomes.

It does not constitute government policy.
