About the document

This document is an independent review of available information related to the sensitivities of marine mammals known to occur in the Great Australian Bight Marine Park (whales, dolphins and sea lions) to activities conducted by the gas and petroleum industry (including exploration, production and decommissioning).

A risk assessment was undertaken to determine the potential risks associated with possible future petroleum activities occurring within the Marine Mammal Protection Zone of the Great Australian Bight Marine Park (Commonwealth waters) on southern right whales and Australian sea lions within the Marine Mammal Protection Zone of the Park.

The report was overseen and reviewed by a specially appointed reference group, as well as the Consultative Committee that provides management input to both the Commonwealth and State marine parks in the Great Australian Bight.
